Preparing Your Student for their School Year Program at SEACAMP San Diego
(Including: What to Bring to SEACAMP, What Not to Bring to SEACAMP, Travel, Tuition, Forms, Luggage, Special Needs, Diet, Health, Safety and Hygiene, General Rules and Behavior, Communication and Social Issues)

SEACAMP San Diego offers a variety of custom programs for school groups from all over the United States. With a maximum group size of 56 participants, we are able to offer custom schedules and instruction geared specifically to students’ knowledge and abilities as well as to teacher specifications. Due to the high level of our staff’s knowledge we find we can be equally successful with elementary- through college-age students.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Our youngest age range for residential programs is 5th Grade. Maturity for overnight trips, readiness for the material covered, and gear sizing has determined our minimum age limit. Younger students are still eligible to participate in our SeaLab Program, where there are options available to suit their grade levels.

Our 5th and 6th grade groups have been most successful with our two-day and three-day schedules which incorporate labs on fish and invertebrates, with field activities such as a tidepool exploration (tides permitting), snorkeling and boogie boarding. Students also accompany staff on a Floating Classroom expedition, which can be combined with watching for California Gray Whales in season.

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
7th through 9th grade schools can choose between many program options, anywhere from a two-day to a five-day schedule. Invertebrate and Fish Labs are customary and teachers may choose to add labs that cover Deep-Sea and Night Adaptations as well as Marine Mammals, especially if your trip will include SeaWorld or the Coronado Islands. A grade-appropriate scavenger hunt activity at the Stephen Birch Aquarium is another way to get students up close and personal with marine life.

Field activities include a tidepool exploration (tides permitting), snorkeling, kayaking and boogie boarding. Group Leaders may choose to go on SEACAMP’s Marine Science Floating Classroom, which can be combined with watching for California Gray Whales in season, or opt for a full day on the boat to the Coronado Islands for a snorkeling trip.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
High school students are ready for a more challenging curriculum, and groups opt for two-day to seven-day schedules. The high caliber of our staff ensures that the program is brought up to the level of your particular group. Labs and workshops like the Advanced Invertebrate Lab or Advanced Marine Mammal Lab build on what students bring with them from their high school curriculum and take students to the next level. Students may probe for living animals among kelp holdfasts or in and among mussel beds. They will learn to use field guides and keys while working with the on-site aquariums. Five- to Seven-day programs may include a trip on a live-aboard dive boat to the lower Channel Islands, which can incorporate a SCUBA Program for already certified students.

COLLEGE GROUPS
College-level groups can participate in a day of activities and labs, or stay on for a residential session. We also have put together trips that incorporate a SCUBA Program for already certified students. Labs and workshops can be tailored to your specific area of study.
