SEACAMP I Schedule

Throughout the SEACAMP I program, Marine Science Instructors utilize our many resources to get students a close look at marine life. They incorporate the on-site aquarium facilities to teach hands-on labs and workshops. Topics covered in lab are reinforced and applied in field activities. The SEACAMP I schedule is structured to allow students to apply their new knowledge through discovery and exploration.

Labs are designed to introduce students to the variety of marine life they will observe in the field. Our instructors teach using a wide variety of live and preserved specimens that students are encouraged to handle and investigate. The topics of labs include invertebrates and fish adaptations to prepare students for the animals they will encounter. The students learn more about sharks with a lab on shark ecology prior to an excursion to La Jolla Shores for a Shark Snorkel. We also conduct water chemistry, plankton studies, physical oceanography and seining activities in the field. These allow students to directly apply the concepts of marine science to real-world observations. Participatory workshops such as deep-sea animals and night adaptations combine the learning with a fun nighttime activity.

SEACAMP I also takes advantage of the attractions that San Diego has to offer. Students will spend a full day at Sea World San Diego. Before heading to Sea World students will take part in a marine mammal workshop that will enhance their visit to the park. Students will learn about the characteristics of marine mammals and their adaptations for survival in the ocean. While at Sea World, students will have the chance to participate in a scavenger hunt. The activity will lead students through the variety of amazing ecosystem exhibits, from the tropical coral reefs of the Pacific to the icy waters of the Artic.

In-water activities range from kayaking to boogie boarding to snorkeling for the SEACAMP I week. Our sit-on-top kayaks allow students a great follow-up to a discussion of shallow bay ecology, in addition to learning some fun kayak games! Our instructors also introduce students to many aspects of physical oceanography. In order to best appreciate and understand the movement of the ocean, especially the waves that Southern California is famous for, all of our students will participate in an oceanographic experiment on their boogie boards. After the experiment is concluded students will have the chance to feel the power of the waves for themselves, while boogie boarding under the supervision of the SEACAMP San Diego staff.

Students of all abilities have been very successful in mastering the skills of snorkeling through our progressive and well-supervised snorkeling program. We expose students to many different sites in the San Diego area, beginning with an introductory session at Mission Point. The highlight of the SEACAMP I week is the trip to the Coronado Islands for snorkeling, marine life interaction and marine mammal watching. Students have an opportunity to further improve their snorkeling skills on the all-day, 65-foot charter boat to the Los Coronados Islands in Mexico. These islands are off the coast and are inhabited by many species of marine mammals and a large abundance of fish and invertebrates. Here the water is very clear and snorkeling is remarkable. During the trip to and from the islands, students frequently encounter whales and dolphins in their natural environment.

SEACAMP I is an excellent way to introduce students to the marine environment. We engage those students who are already interested in Marine Science as well as spark the interest of those with little previous exposure.
