SEACAMP III in San Diego is an eight-day program for high school students that have previously attended SEACAMP II. SEACAMP III is scheduled similarly to SEACAMP II, but adds an extra day to the boat trip and introduces more advanced labs and projects.

Students will participate in advanced labs, guest lectures and workshops during SEACAMP III. Their invertebrate, fish and marine mammal knowledge will continue to be challenged and expanded. They will get further experience in the use of field guides and keys while working on SEACAMP's comprehensive species list of the Southern Channel Islands. For this project students will further hone their skills as they complete literature searches, conduct field observations and participate in the collection of specimens.

The guest lectures for the SEACAMP III Program vary, depending upon the experts available to speak to the students about current research in their fields. Past lectures include "Deep Sea Fish Ecology" with Dr. Jeffrey Drazen, "Current Shark Research" with Dr. Chugey Sepulveda, and "Antarctic Research" by Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Diving Safety Officer Christian McDonald.

SEACAMP III also includes visits to some of the attractions that San Diego has to offer. Students visit the Stephen Birch Aquarium Museum and spend a full day at Sea World San Diego or the San Diego Zoo. Students will have the rare opportunity to tour the Scripps Institute of Oceanography research pier, which is not usually accessible to the general public. While visiting some of these world-class facilities, students will have the chance to participate in scavenger hunts and to work on their individual research projects using these terrific local resources.

SEACAMP III has even more opportunities for in-water skills, field research and observation. Students will be given additional opportunities to boogie board and snorkel from a variety of sites throughout the San Diego area. For SEACAMP III students and staff board one of the Horizon Charters' live-aboard dive boats, two of the largest dive boats in Southern California, which are comfortably equipped for many days at sea. The boat cruises through the night and in the morning students awake to find themselves at one of the southernmost Channel Islands. Conditions permitting students may have the opportunity to dive and snorkel at Santa Barbara or San Nicholas Islands, in addition to Santa Catalina and San Clemente. While at sea, the group will participate in a collective research project focusing on local ecosystems. Students who are certified or finishing certification and are 14 years or older will have the opportunity to participate in the SCUBA program. Students and staff live on board for three days of snorkeling, diving, kayaking and other water activities before returning to San Diego.
