Make a splash this summer! SEACAMP I is a 6-day, 5-night residential camp for students entering 7th–12th grade, designed to give ocean explorers a broad, hands-on introduction to marine biology. It’s the first step in our progressive overnight program, where each summer builds on the last.
Students dive into labs and workshops covering topics like fish adaptations, marine mammals, shark ecology, plankton studies, and more — using aquariums, live specimens, and preserved marine animals to bring science to life. And the adventure doesn’t stop indoors — students take their knowledge to the waves with exciting field activities like snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boogie boarding. The week culminates with an epic full-day boat trip and snorkel excursion — the highlight of every camper’s experience!
Students may be grouped by age to maximize learning, and those in 8th–12th grade can continue their adventure by attending SEACAMP I & II consecutively. This progressive program ensures every camper builds knowledge and confidence each summer.

SEACAMP San Diego Location
Camp location is on Mission Bay just north of downtown San Diego and approximately 7 miles from the San Diego International Airport. This location has our dorms, restrooms, showers, classrooms, aquariums with access to a permit only beach.
Housing
Students will be housed in a traditional open style dorm equipped with bunk beds. We have two large dorm rooms, one for female identifying students and one for male identifying students. Students are assured 24-hour supervision by our SEACAMP Marine Science Instructors that spend the night in the dorms with the students. Students bring their own bottom sheets, sleeping bags and pillows. Dorms are separated by a courtyard area, which encloses a safe space to play games and hang out, and provides a sunlit outdoor area for the tables for meals or alternate lab space. Bathrooms are across the courtyard with separate facilities for males and females. Each bathroom is equipped with toilet facilities and separate, individually curtained showers. To conserve water, showers are push button showers. SEACAMP San Diego currently only has binary dorm and bathroom options; either male or female.
Meals
SEACAMP San Diego provides all meals that are included on your schedule. Meals are supplied by our caterer and are prepared in their kitchen. Breakfasts and dinners are usually cafeteria-style and served at our camp facility. Lunches are “brown-bag” style and usually eaten in the field. Meals are delicious and varied, well-balanced and include fresh fruits and vegetables. However, snacks are not included. If your student will need more than the meals provided, please have them bring individually wrapped snacks in a bag labeled with their name. Snacks will be stored and available daily to students.
Classroom Facilities
All of our lab & workshop facilities are tailored for the specific needs of our program and include a classroom with a running seawater system, a full aquarium room with touch tank, a shark tank with live specimens, and microscopes.
Students participate a variety of activities – each day is different and includes a combination of labs and field activities that are chosen to maximize time and provide students with a one of a kind experience. Based on enrollments students are split into two groups by age/grade with older students in one group and younger students in the other group. Students will do almost all of their activities with their respective age groups. Students enjoy a hot breakfast at camp with lunches generally being picnic style and eaten in the field. At the end of the day students have dinner prior to their evening programs.
Marine Science Labs & Workshops
Our labs and workshops bring marine science to life, introducing students to the fascinating marine life they’ll encounter in the field. Using a variety of live and preserved specimens, students get hands-on opportunities to observe, handle, and investigate the adaptations that help marine animals survive. Topics include invertebrates, fish adaptations, shark ecology, conservation, and human impacts on marine life.
Students will also explore the ocean’s more mysterious inhabitants during workshops on deep-sea animals and nighttime adaptations, discovering how marine life survives in some of the ocean’s most unusual environments. Our Marine Mammals workshop takes a closer look at the world’s largest mammals and the incredible ways they are adapted to life in the ocean.
Water Adventures
SEACAMP I students dive into a variety of water activities, including kayaking, boogie boarding, stand-up paddle boarding, and snorkeling. Our sit-on-top kayaking adventures combine an introduction to shallow bay ecology with plenty of opportunities for fun, including kayak games along the way! Students will also paddle board from our Mission Bay facility, with one or two students per board and include time for fun games and challenges. Then it’s time to experience the waves Southern California is famous for as students try boogie boarding, not once but twice!
Whether they’re new to snorkeling or already comfortable in the water, students can build their skills and confidence through our progressive snorkeling program. We start with an introductory session at Mission Point before heading to La Jolla Shores for our exciting Shark Snorkel. The week culminates in a SEACAMP favorite: an all-day boat trip filled with opportunities to explore the ocean and observe marine life up close.
All water activities are conducted under the guidance and supervision of SEACAMP San Diego instructors and lifeguards.
A Day on the Water
Our all-day boat trip begins with a safety briefing before we head out for a day of ocean exploration! Students will snorkel at a designated site, observe marine life in its natural habitat, and keep an eye out for marine mammals along the way. Time permitting, students may also participate in an otter trawl, examining the animals collected and discussing their roles in the marine ecosystem.
From snorkeling in open water to spotting marine wildlife, it’s an exciting opportunity to put marine science into practice and experience the ocean from a whole new perspective!
A Day at SeaWorld San Diego
Students will visit SeaWorld San Diego to complement our Marine Mammals workshop, learning more about these incredible animals while exploring different perspectives on animal care, captivity, education, and conservation.
orld San Diego! Our visit will pair with our Marine Mammals workshop and a discussion of the pros and cons of animal captivity.
An Unplugged Experience
At SEACAMP San Diego, students enjoy an unplugged experience with time away from computers, TVs, and cell phones. This allows them to focus on marine science, outdoor adventures, and building friendships with fellow campers.
Parents may find the time apart more challenging than their students do! With busy schedules, new activities, and new friends, campers are often fully engaged throughout the week. We will contact parents if significant concerns or difficulties arise that require their attention. SEACAMP staff have access to cell phones for staff communication and emergencies.
Communicating with Your Student
Family and friends may send messages to campers by emailing camper@seacamp.com. Please include your student’s name in the subject line. Emails are printed and delivered to campers about once a day. As internet access is unavailable at camp, students cannot reply. Please refrain from sending photos to help minimize waste. Messages may be reviewed, and those containing inappropriate subject matter may not be delivered and may be forwarded to a parent or guardian.
Care packages or letters from home are not permitted and will not be delivered to students. Unfortunately, the lengths of camp sessions are not conducive to timely arrivals. In the case of forgotten medications or other emergencies, please contact us.
Helping Your Student Adjust
Our instructors are experienced in supporting students through homesickness, social challenges, and the adjustment to camp life. They work with students to address concerns and find solutions suited to their individual needs. In our experience having students call home is often not a productive solution. However, instructors will contact parents when additional support or communication is needed or if issues are severe or persistent.
The first day can be an adjustment, so we keep students engaged with activities such as setting up their bunk space, meeting their group leader, selecting SEACAMP swag, and preparing their gear bags. Camp tours are available for students and parents who check in before 11:30 a.m. In our experience, students often settle in and build friendships more quickly once their families have departed.
Before camp, please encourage your student to communicate openly with instructors about any questions, concerns, or needs. We can best support students when we know what they are experiencing.
Electronics Policy
All electronic are prohibited including cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, tablets, e-readers, gaming consoles, computers, and MP3 players. Any electronics brought to camp will be collected at check-in and returned at check-out such as for students flying to/from camp. During the session students will not call home. Please remember no news is good news. In an emergency or if an important concern arises, our instructors will contact parents/guardians.
Electronic items found at camp may be returned for a flat $50 shipping fee.
Digital cameras are the only exception to the electronics policy. Additionally, students attending consecutive sessions are able to call home at the conclusion of their first session and prior to the start of their second session.

Medical Information and Medications
Registration Forms include the Health Information Form where parents/guardians provide their student’s medical conditions, allergies, dietary requirements, and prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. All information provided must be true and accurate for your student and must be updated if anything changes. All medical information is kept confidential and only shared to support student safety and provide care. SEACAMP San Diego stocks several OTC medications that are provided to students as authorized on the Health Form.
Students are responsible for self-administering their prescription medications. SEACAMP staff are not authorized to administer prescription medications, except emergency medications such as EpiPens, which trained staff may administer in an emergency. Reminders to take needed medications are provided to the group each morning and evening. Students are responsible for taking their medications. If this is concern for your student, we would recommend a watch with a alarm function. All student medications must be stored in a zip-top bag labeled with the student’s name. At bedtime, prescription and OTC medications are collected and locked in a container overnight. Emergency medications, including EpiPens and inhalers, remain with students at all times. Other medications will be available or returned to students each morning.
Illness, Injury, and Communication
Students should promptly inform SEACAMP instructors of any illness, injury, or health concern so staff can provide appropriate support. We cannot address or help remedy situations they are not made aware of. If your student becomes ill or injured at camp, we will keep you informed of their condition and progress. Whenever possible, parents/guardians will be included in decisions regarding their student’s care. Please remember no news, is good news.
Personal Wellness and Sun Safety
SEACAMP instructors remind students to maintain good hygiene, keep their dorm spaces clean, wear appropriate clothing, and bring water bottles for daily activities. Hydration and sun protection are essential to a safe and enjoyable camp experience. Instructors remind students to drink water regularly and apply and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Water and sunscreen are available to students, including during off-site activities.
Before camp, please discuss expectations with your student regarding personal hygiene, appropriate attire, hydration, and sun protection. Students are ultimately responsible for following these practices and communicating their needs to staff.
